Futuristic Security Council Background Story

May 2014

Ukraine’s stock market crashes. Inflation and unemployment is at an all time high. Up to 80 percent are unemployed. Riots and protests have started happening. People are calling for the president Oleksandr Turchynov to step down this time.

July 2014

Unemployment has not gotten any better in Ukraine. Protests grow. A man gets shot and killed by the police in one of them. Government officials, however, deny that this has happened. The people, outraged[a] by this have started doing arsons and protests escalate to armed conflict. The police too have started using firearms. Ukraine is approaching civil war.

August 2014

For the first time in history, North Korea has had a successful nuclear test. Drills have become more frequent along the border as well. This event has drawn international attention and some member nations begin to feel threatened

October 2014

The United States almost reaches their debt[b] ceiling once again, this time a whopping 18 trillion dollars. The government is forced to shut down. costing the US economy close to $300 million a DAY. 800,000 government employees lose their jobs and are furloughed, with most government bodies maintaining only a skeleton crew, with the exception of certain services deemed ‘essential’ by the government. The United States owes a national debt of 144.7 billion to Luxembourg, 162.9 billion to Russia, 192.7 billion to Switzerland, 196 billion to Taiwan, 253.4 billion to Brazil and 1.12 trillion to Japan, 1,25 trillion to China. China a holder of a large portion of US debts has agreed to defer loan repayments for an unspecified period of time until the US government regains its financial status, after which a 10% compounded interest would be imposed on all money owed. Russia on the other side is beginning to issue threats to the president of the United States, Barack Obama regarding the unpaid debts.

November 2014

During a Congress meeting, a powerful shrapnel bomb disguised as a suitcase explodes, killing and maiming Democrats and Republicans. President Obama escapes with minor injuries. The next day, Taliban publicly announce that the bomb was their doing and it was vengeance for a recent drone strike which killed many unarmed women and children. They also spoke of future plans of terror. The stock market crashes triggered by panic selling. The US is forced to cut military expenditure by nearly $500 billion so as to prevent defaulting and a new Emergency Budget is drawn. Civilians feel insecure towards national security after the recent attack targeted at the president.

December 2014

The cut in military expenditure means US withdrawing its troops from South Korea. This means a large portion of South Korea’s military power is now gone. Meanwhile in Ukraine, rebels are seen using PP-2000s a Russian submachine gun. Russian troops have still not left Ukraine but have not taken any action otherwise. In Syria, radical Islamist group ISIS has continued its massacre and increased its military presence in Syria while getting themselves involved in armed conflicts with the al-Qaeda group.

January 2015

North Korea fires artillery shells onto the island of Ganghwado in South Korea, resulting in 15 fatalities and 30 casualties. US flagged ships have been seen carrying missiles to Ukraine. South Korea is starting to question its international relationship with the United States upon receiving intel. Although the US no longer provides military support for South Korea, it is still however donating missiles to Ukraine. Therefore, South Korea is deeply disappointed with the feeling of betrayal the US has instilled within the hearts of South Koreans, especially as it is in times like this when South Korea needs the aid of the US .

February 2015

The Ukrainian government has started using tanks to now contain the rising conflict in its state. Ukraine is in full scale civil war. The death toll is at 60,000. US is openly providing military aid to Ukraine as a show of support in this civil war. Ukraine on the other hand has expressed its hope to repay the debt to the US as a sign of gratitude for their help. This however was taken as a provocation to Russia and tension between nations increase.
